1,000 Warrior Poses and Counting.
Warrior two (virabhadrasana II), is that marquee standing pose in vinyasa yoga that never lets me down - landing in its wide stance with arms extended out, I feel steady, stable, balanced - and in 2017 who doesn't desire that?!
After thousands of warrior two's over the years it remains as relevant and necessary to my practice as ever; whether I'm refining the alignment of my pelvis in warrior two or connecting to the steady, stable, balanced vibe it gives me. Warrior two is the pose that reminds me why I started doing yoga (that steady, stable, balanced vibe) and why I continue to practice yoga. When life is pulling me every which way and there is no time for an hour long yoga class I find 10-15 minutes to practice the yoga poses I want and need most. Warrior two is obviously one of those poses.
Why all the adoration for warrior two, you ask?
Because, in the Summer it's easy to drift away from our yoga mat. It's that transitional time of the year when the sun is shining, skies are blue, and all the fun outdoor activities have our attention.
This post is a reminder, a reminder that:
- You can take your yoga with you wherever you go. (Hello tree pose in the park).
- We don't have to have breakthroughs every time we step onto our mat.
- Your yoga practice doesn't always have to be 60 minutes long! A shorter yoga practice of 10, 15, 20 minutes is still yoga and still very effective.
- Practice the poses you love and discover something new in them.
- Don't forget the basics. A ballerina's warm-up always begins the same way - in first position. From the child taking their first ballet class to the prima ballerina on stage, first position remains important and necessary. So to do those foundational yoga poses.
- It's the hours we put in doing what we love that make us who we are. Warrior two is the pose that reminds me of that.
What yoga pose reconnects you to YOU? To your practice?
